As part of a series called “Meet our Deeps,” we introduce you to Carmen Silva, a cyber security data quality manager at DeepSeas. Let’s dive in to learn more about Carmen’s work and career.
Q: Hi, Carmen. Can you tell us what you enjoy most about your work as a Cyber Security Data Quality Manager at DeepSeas?
A: As a cyber security data quality manager, I most enjoy that my work directly impacts and improves cyber attack detection capabilities. My strengths are used to analyze and interpret logs collected from security devices. The interpretation is leveraged in the creation and application of data parsing, which is used to increase efficiency on alert building.
Q: Please share a little bit with us about your career journey. Any major milestones you are proud of or particular hurdles you overcame?
A: Before I began my career in cyber security, I worked for an internet service provider for about 11 years. I was part of the customer service team for two years. During that time I was also in college studying CISCO Systems and later was certified. I was then promoted to the technical support department as a member of the trouble-tickets group. From there I transitioned to the engineering department where I held the title of Technical Support Engineer for about four years.
During my years in both technical support and engineering, I was the first and only female in each department.
Next on my journey was a move to San Diego, where I started my career in cyber security working for Security On Demand – now DeepSeas. I started as a cyber security operator and was promoted to a Security Operations Center (SOC) analyst. I was later promoted to a SOC analyst lead and next to manager for an analyst team. I was again the first and only woman in my department for the first roughly six and a half years and being promoted to a management position was, without a doubt, a milestone in my career.
With dedication, passion, great leadership, and a truly amazing team, we always got the work done despite significant challenges. In total, I was part of the Security Operations Center for about seven and a half years. I then moved on to create the data quality crew, where I currently manage most of the parsing/mapping and data quality work related to cloud implementations.
I absolutely love what I do and hope to continue being part of this great company for many, many more years.
